WW2 US Navy KIA Purple Heart Type 1 Group

$1,195.00

Offered for sale is an incredible Purple Heart group awarded to a US Navy sailor who was killed during the Sicily campaign in Italy. There is quite a bit written online if you search Schirmer’s name. To summarize, Schirmer’s ship was struck with a “Fritz Bomb” which was essentially the first radio controlled munition that was launched from a bomber. This munition killed 206 sailors total on his ship. The medal is nicely accompanied by the Britain’s Homage book published in his honor. The medal is made of sterling silver, and is a type 1 variant. This medal was originally found without its ribbon, and has since been professionally restored with the correct original ribbon. Purple Hearts, especially KIA’s are collected by the actions of the men who were awarded them. This action is quite interesting, and historically relevant.
